Summary:
I have 1999 Ford Contour with a CD4E transmission in it. The complaint is that the car slips in both forward and reverse cold, but operates fine after it warms up. I road tested it with a pressure gage and scanner(no codes). Pressure was way low on the first cold start of the day ( 20 degrees). Only had 30 to 40 psi of line pressure. After it warmed up, the pressures were good and shifts were excellent. I suspect that pump, valve body or filter are the most likely causes of this problem. Is there anything more I can do as far as preliminary diagnosis goes, before I pull it out for inspection. Also what areas should I pay particular attention too as they relate to this problem. The line pressure in reverse was a tad high (right on the ragged edge of 300psi). I know this is an indication of pressure regulator valve wear, but will it also cause the low pressure issues I’m having? I’m not that familiar with the habits of this transmission, I’ve only done a couple of them. I would appreciate any words of wisdom you can offer in pointing me in the right direction. Thanks, Steve
